ARE RAW FARM DAIRY PRODUCTS A2?

Over the past few years, our TOP frequently asked question has been on the subject of raw milk and A2/A1. Customers wonder if our raw dairy products are A2, and whether or not A2 milk is more digestible than other types of milk. Continue reading to find out more.

WHAT IS A2 MILK?

The science of A2/A1 is not fully understood within the industry or consumer base. What we do know is that cows with A2 genetics have one amino acid different (the beta-casein protein BCM-7 to be exact) out of the 209 Beta-casein amino acids found in milk. Beta-casein makes up approximately 30% of cow milk proteins. There are approximately 2500 different proteins found in milk and each protein has a specific function. It’s important to understand that most cows produce a mix of A1 and A2 Beta-casein. The science of how that one different amino acid affects human health is not fully understood. Once these delicate proteins are pasteurized, they are altered from their natural state.

IS RAW FARM RAW MILK A2?

Drum roll please…yes! We have a lot of A2 cows in our herd. We do not promote a full 100% A2 herd because we have milking cows that are healthy that are A1. We have 9 different breeds that make our deliciously nutritious milk! We have beautiful Jersey, Jersey Cross, Holstein, Montbeliarde, Normande, Guernsey, Scandinavian Red, a few Milking Short Horn, and Brown Swiss. All of these ladies provide the milk you drink. Our experience has been that all raw milk is equally easy to digest and this science is mostly focused on ways to make highly processed milk easier to digest (if possible).

As part of our Certified Humane program, we do not slaughter our healthy cows simply on the bases of A1 status. We do breed with A2 bull genetics, but we will not slaughter an animal just because she tests as an A1 cow breed. On our dairy, under our values and mission, if the cow is healthy and happy… she lives happily and as long as she can healthily on our farm (A1 or A2).
