4 ways HOW TO KEEP RAW MILK FRESH

Truly, most of us prefer sweet, delicious, creamy raw milk…not sour raw milk. But, at some point raw milk will naturally begin to sour (it’s a part of its natural process). Fresh dairy products are not meant to last more than 16 days, similar to fresh fruits and vegetables. Raw dairy is no different and should be cared for the same. There are a handful of ways that you get the most of our raw milk while it’s fresh.

1.     Keep it cold

a.    Use an insulated bag with ice packs to keep the milk chilled until it can be stored in the refrigerator at home. Summer months is the most challenging because our cars get very hot, so take extra care.

b.    Put your milk in the coldest part of your refrigerator. This is generally on the top shelf near the back. It is not recommended to store on the side door shelf. Use a thermometer to verify your refrigerator temperature is less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Don’t rely on the temperature control dial.

c.     Don’t leave your RAW FARM Raw Whole Milk sitting on the counter. After pouring what you need, quickly put the bottle back in the refrigerator. Because oxygen also plays an important role in the foods’ souring process, never leave the cap off for any longer than a few seconds.

2.     Learn what day of the week your store receives their RAW FARM delivery

a.    Make friends with your dairy case manager and learn the delivery dates and times for optimal times to shop. Find your store’s weekly delivery day here.

3.     Read the date on the back of the label

a.    In most cases, we deliver to your store weekly. Each week our driver will remove any older milk from the shelf and replenish it with fresh raw milk that should have a minimum of 6 days left before the use-by date. 4.     Buy only as much fresh raw milk as your family consumes in 5-7 days

a.    Bigger is not always better with raw milk. Unless your family consumes a gallon regularly, opt for the smaller size. If you find that you are running out before you can make it back to the market, drink more or buy extra for freezing.

b. If you have extra raw milk, you can also freeze it to preserve freshness.

HOW LONG DOES RAW MILK last before souring?

RAW FARM Whole Raw Milk generally has a shelf life of 16 days after it is milked from the cow. Every bottle has a use-by date printed on the bottle to refer to.

Compared to processed dairy products that can become rancid after the expiration date, raw milk simply evolves and naturally sours. Soured milk is NOT “bad!” The healthy simply bacteria multiply into a more pro-biotic beverage. Lightly soured raw milk (before curdling) that has previously been tested for pathogens, like our raw milk, can be made into other products.
